Definition of Terms:

Substance Abuse: “A maladaptive pattern of substance use manifested by recurrent and significant adverse consequences related to repeated use of the substance.” (APA, 2000).

Substance Dependence: A compulsive or chronic requirement. The need for substance is so severe and causes distress (either physical or psychological) if left unfulfilled.

Substance Tolerance: is the need for more substance to produce the same effect

Tolerance Break: The person intoxicated by very small amounts of alcohol.

Substance Intoxication: An individual experiences a reversible syndrome of symptoms that occur with ingestion of a substance.
The behavior changes can be attributed to the physiological effects of the substance on the central nervous system (CNS).

Substance Withdrawal: Is the negative psychological and physical reactions that occur when use of a substance ceases or dramatically decreases.

Detoxification: Is the process of safely withdrawing from a substance.
