Introduction to Maternity Nursing

On completion of this lecture the student will be able to:
1. Identify the goals and philosophy of maternal and child health nursing.
2. Describe the progress, scope, standards, and professional roles for nurses in maternal and child health nursing.
3. Describe family structure, according to type of family

Terminology
- Obstetrics:
“Obstetrics” or the care of women during childbirth ,is derived from the Greek word obstare, which means “to keep watch”.
Is the branch of medicine that deals with the phenomena & management of pregnancy, labor, and the puerperium under normal & abnormal circumstances.
Gynecology:
The word “Gyneco” is a Latin ward, which means “Female”. It means the study of the female reproductive organs disorders
It is the branch of medicine which deals with diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of pathology of the female reproductive system.
Gynecologic Nursing
It is the branch of nursing concerned with the provision of nursing care to women who have reproductive tract diseases.




Maternity Nursing
The full scope of nursing that deals with families during childbearing period.
It is that branch of nursing concerned with the provision of physical, mental, and social nursing care to women during the maternity cycle( pregnancy, labor, and the puerperium).




The primary Goal of Maternity Nursing Care
The promotion and maintenance of optimal family health to ensure the cycle of optimal childbearing.
Maternity Health Care
Includes:
- Widely available family planning services.
- Effective maternal care and safe motherhood.
- Effective control of reproductive tract infections including sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
- Prevention and management of infertility.
- Elimination of unsafe abortion.
The Scope of Practice in Maternity Nursing include:

- Pre-conceptual health care.
- Care of the women during three trimesters of pregnancy and the puerperium ( the 6 weeks after childbirth).
- Care of infants during the perinatal period (28 gestational weeks – 6 hrs after birth).
-Care of children from birth through adolescence
- Care in settings as varied as the birthing room, the pediatric intensive care unit, and the home
• Definitions and Examples of Phases of Health Care
teaching women the importance of rubella immunization before pregnancy Educating clients to be aware of good health through Teaching and role modeling Health promotion
Encouraging women to come for prenatal care Intervening to maintain health when risk of illness is present Health maintenance
Caring for a woman during a complication of pregnancy or a child during an acute illness Promptly diagnosing and treating illness using interventions that will return client pregnancy or a child during an acute illness to wellness most rapidly Health restoration
Encouraging a woman with gestational trophoblastic disease to continue therapy or
a child with a renal transplant to continue to take necessary medications Preventing further complications from an
illness; bringing an ill client back to an optimal state of wellness or helping a
client to accept inevitable death Health rehabilitation


Defining the Concept of Family
• A family is defined :
“a group of people related by blood, marriage, or adoption living together.”
Family Types
1. The Dyad Family
A dyad family consists of two people living together, usually a woman and a man, without children
2. The Nuclear Family
The traditional nuclear family structure is composed of a husband, wife, and children.
3.The Polygamous Family
Man a marriage with multiple wives.
4.The Blended Family
In a blended family, or a remarriage or reconstituted family, a divorced or widowed person with children marries someone who also has children.
5.The Extended (Multigenerational) Family
An extended family includes not only the nuclear family but also other family members such as grandmothers, grand fathers, aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandchildren
